A group of doctors have renewed their calls for taxation, and released a new report showing that 40 more global jurisdictions have imposed a tax on sugar-containing drinks since June 2021, bringing the total to 85 countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Danielle McMullin said on Friday that Australians drink enough sugary drinks to fill 960 Olympic-size swimming pools each year and that the government should "help" people kick their sugar addiction and choose water instead.
Dr. McMullen said the federal government could impose a tax of 40 cents on every 100 grams of sugar that manufacturers add to drinks.
"It would only mean a 16 cent increase in the price of a regular can of soft drink, but the consequences of that would be great health outcomes."
